Skincare Resources
There’s no shortage of skincare recommendations online.
What’s harder to find is context.
This page is a curated list of products I trust for skin in transition, especially during perimenopause, when skin often becomes drier, more reactive, and less predictable. These are not trend-driven picks or exhaustive lists. They’re products I’d feel comfortable recommending as a starting point, based on formulation, tolerance, and long-term skin health.
That said, skincare is never one-size-fits-all. What works beautifully for one person can be wrong for another, even with similar concerns. If you’re looking for guidance tailored specifically to your skin, written skin assessments allow me to make thoughtful, individualized recommendations.
-This list is updated as my recommendations evolve.
SECTION 1 – Cleansers
Gentle, Barrier-Supportive Cleansing
Cleansing in midlife should remove sunscreen, makeup, and debris without disrupting the lipid barrier. Tightness after washing is not a sign of cleanliness; it’s often a sign of compromise.
These cleansers range from micellar and oil-based options (ideal for makeup removal or double cleansing) to low-foam, glycerin-rich washes that maintain hydration.
Choose based on:
Very dry skin → cream or glycerin-forward formulas
Wearing makeup or sunscreen daily → micellar water, oil, or balm first cleanse
Reactive or sensitive skin → minimal-ingredient, low-foam cleansers
Products:
Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water
Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm
Prequel Skin Pre-Gleanse Oil Cleanser for Face
Prequel Gleanser Glycerin Face Wash
Cetaphil Hydrating Foaming Cream Cleanser
SECTION 2 – Hydration & Barrier Support
Hydrating Serums & Moisturizers
During perimenopause, hydration and barrier resilience become foundational. When this layer is stable, actives like retinoids and exfoliants are better tolerated.
This category includes:
- Humectant serums (hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol)
- Barrier-repair moisturizers (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids)
- Richer creams for lipid-deficient skin
Choose based on:
Using retinoids → prioritize barrier-supportive moisturizers
Tightness + dehydration → hydrating serum under moisturizer
Flaking or irritation → richer cream with barrier lipids
Products:
Prequel Multi-Quench Plumping Hydration Serum
Experiment Super Saturated Hydrating Barrier Serum
Paula’s Choice 7% Ectoin + Hyaluronic Acid Milky Hydrating Serum

SECTION 3 – Retinoids
Cell Turnover + Collagen Support
Retinoids remain one of the most evidence-backed ingredients for acne, uneven tone, and fine lines.
In midlife, success depends less on strength and more on:
- Formulation
- Frequency
- Barrier support
Choose based on:
- Acne-prone skin → adapalene or tretinoin
- Texture + aging support → tretinoin or retinal
- Sensitive skin → retinol, start low, reduce frequency
Introduce slowly. A pea-sized amount is sufficient.
Products:
Tretinoin (Rx only)
Prequel Renew Retinaldehyde Gel
CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum
Naturium Retinol Complex Cream
La Roche-Posay Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% Acne Treatment – (Prescription strength Retinoid)

SECTION 4 – Pigmentation & Brightening
Hormonal + Sun-Induced Discoloration Support
Uneven tone during perimenopause is usually multifactorial:
- Hormonal shifts
- Cumulative sun exposure
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation
Correction requires consistency, not aggression.
This section includes:
- Vitamin C (antioxidant support + brightness)
- Azelaic acid (pigment + inflammation support)
- Thiamidol (tyrosinase inhibitor)
- Tranexamic acid (targeted discoloration)
- Gentle exfoliants (PHA/AHA blends)
Choose based on:
- Dullness → Vitamin C
- Post-acne marks → Azelaic acid or tranexamic acid
- Stubborn dark spots → Hydroquinone (Rx) or Thiamidol
- Melasma → Hydroquinone (Rx) or tranexamic acid
- Sensitive skin → PHA over stronger AHAs
Pigment responds best to a layered but gentle approach.

- Pigmentation prevention
- Collagen preservation
- Reducing inflammation
Choose based on:
- Acne-prone skin → lightweight or zinc-based formulas
- Drier skin → hydrating cream formulas
Application amount matters more than brand.

- Unpredictable
Shift from correcting to calming.

- Hormonal shifts
- Slower cell turnover
- Inflammation
- Compromised barrier function
This category includes:
- BHAs for pore congestion
- Mandelic acid for gentler exfoliation
- Azelaic acid for acne + pigment
- Adapalene for regulation
Choose based on:
- Deep jawline breakouts → retinoid foundation
- Blackheads/congestion → BHA

Avoid stacking multiple exfoliants.
Regulation > stripping.
