Best Sunscreens for Skin Over 40

In last week’s post, we talked about why sunscreen becomes even more important in midlife. This week, I’m sharing some of my favorite sunscreens specifically for skin over 40—chosen with common midlife concerns in mind, like dryness, sensitivity, acne, and hyperpigmentation.
I’ve personally tested each of these, paying close attention to how they apply, wear throughout the day, and who they work best for.
Daily sunscreen use is essential for overall skin health and remains the most important step in your routine. Without it, even the most advanced skincare and expensive treatments won’t deliver the results you’re looking for. Sunscreen helps prevent photo-damage like fine lines, uneven pigmentation, and loss of firmness, while also protecting the collagen we’re working hard to maintain in midlife.
First: What Makes European, Asian & Australian Sunscreens Different?
If you’ve spent time researching sunscreen online, you’ve probably heard people talk about European, Japanese, Korean, or Australian sunscreens being “better” than many formulas available in the United States. There’s actually a reason for that. That doesn’t mean that U.S. sunscreens don’t work – they absolutely do.
In the U.S., sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug by the FDA. Because of this, any new UV filter must go through a long and expensive approval process. While safety matters, the downside is that the U.S. has approved very few new sunscreen filters in decades.
Other countries, including many in Europe and Asia, regulate sunscreen more like a cosmetic product, which has allowed them to innovate much faster and develop newer-generation filters with stronger UVA protection and more elegant textures.
Currently, the U.S. has around 16–17 approved UV filters, while the European Union has closer to 29, with Japan, Korea, and Australia also having access to many newer filters not available in American formulas.
One of the most talked-about newer filters is Mexoryl 400, found in the European version of La Roche-Posay UVMune 400 sunscreens. Mexoryl 400 was designed to help protect against ultra-long UVA rays, which contribute significantly to photoaging and pigmentation. Many sunscreen enthusiasts and dermatologists consider the UVMune 400 line among the most advanced sunscreens currently available.

That said, the best sunscreen is the one you’ll use every day, consistently, regardless of where it came from. There are so many amazing U.S. sunscreens available; several of which are mentioned in this post. Use whatever is accessible, affordable, and something you’ll enjoy using every day. U.S. sunscreen formulations are always improving and they absolutely work, so if there’s a U.S. sunscreen you love, please continue using it! I just want you to understand all options. Also, try not to get too caught up in choosing between mineral and chemical sunscreens. As long as your sunscreen is broad-spectrum (protecting against both UVA and UVB) and at least SPF 30 or higher, that’s most important.

Eucerin Sun Advanced Hydration SPF 50 Lotion – A deeply hydrating body sunscreen that doesn’t feel sticky or heavy. Great for daily use, especially if your skin tends to feel dry or rough.
Reapplication
For reapplication, a lightweight fluid sunscreen tends to work best—something like the Paula’s Choice RESIST Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50 or La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen SPF 60. These textures layer more evenly over skin and makeup, helping you apply enough product to maintain proper protection.
Stick, spray, and powder sunscreens don’t always distribute enough product to give you full SPF coverage, but they’re fine if that’s what you have on hand. Just be sure to apply generously and do several passes to build up adequate protection.
I personally reapply at least once mid-day, every day, even when I’m indoors. Your morning application doesn’t provide full day protection. It breaks down and wears off over time, so reapplication is important for full day coverage. Remember to always reapply after sweating or swimming, and every two hours when spending time outdoors.
Important Note: If you’re ordering sunscreens from other countries, keep in mind that shipping costs and import fees/tariffs may apply depending on your country. Because of that, it’s often more cost-effective to place a larger order with multiple products rather than purchasing a single sunscreen at a time.
If you’re unsure which sunscreen is right for your specific skin type or concerns, that’s exactly where my personalized skin assessments come in. I can help you choose the best option based on your skin and goals.
